Setup:
Goalies in nets.
Two players per team (2v2) below the hash marks near the net at each end.
Extra pucks placed at the center of the ice with the coach and extra players, between the hash marks at each end.
Drill Description:
The coach places puck for 2v2 that plays out BELOW the hash marks at each end of the ice. The 2v2 is initiated by the coaches dump. Players are trying to score.
On the coach's whistle, players LEAVE the puck they are at and race to the opposite end to retrieve the puck left there.
Once the players retrieve the puck, they play a 2v2 (trying to score) until the coach blows the whistle again.
When the whistle blows, four new players enter the drill (two from each team), and the drill restarts.
If a goal is scored, the goalie quickly retrieves the puck and places it in the corner.
Key Points:
Focus on puck protection.
Emphasize movement and finding open space.
When racing to the other end, players should keep their heads up to avoid collisions with other players.
Progression:
The first 2v2 can be possession only with G warming up by tracking puck, with shot from coach or player in line on whistle.
Both 2v2s can be possession only with G warming up by tracking puck, with shot from coach or player in line on whistle.
*As with any drill, it's important to assess your players' abilities, strengths, and needs, making any necessary adaptations to ensure the drill is effective for your team.
